Welcome to the 3IT
Innovation Center for Immersive Imaging Technologies Berlin
How will 3D evolve and what role will all other immersive imaging technologies play in the future? What we need is a place where a wide and varied range of actors can congregate with all their expertise, a place where technologies and innovations can be tested and presented and where we can ponder over business models and marketing strategies together. Brainstorming does not work alone!
The 3IT partners constitute a network of research institutions and industrial businesses. They merge specific competences of different areas of immersive imaging technologies and therefore cover the entire sector. Together with our partners we are building a unique and strong brand in Germany.
Immersive imaging technologies are not only important in the entertainment sector. We also promote Germany in traditionally strong sectors, such as the automotive and medical industries, by setting clear objectives:
- Transfer of knowledge between science and economy
- Identification and definition of quality standards
- Generation of synergies and joint usage of resources
- Utilization of location advantages in Berlin
The Steering Committee is Responsible for Determining the 3IT’s Strategic Direction
The 3IT has been established and is operated by the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute for Communication Technology. Fraunhofer HHI concludes a bilateral agreement with each partner of the 3IT, which regulates the financing of the 3IT through a service package (bronze, silver, gold or platinum).
The Steering Committee of the 3IT, chaired by Dr. Ralf Schäfer, defines the strategic direction of the center. It determines the projects, monitors them and can, in individual cases, assume an advisory function when new partners or guests are admitted. The Steering Committee also decides on joint presentations at trade fairs and similar events.
Members of the Steering Committee are: ARRI Cinetechnik, Deutsche Telekom, Dolby, Fraunhofer HHI, Fraunhofer IIS, reallifefilm international and Sky Deutschland.
The 3IT offers its partners the unique opportunity to jointly develop the field of immersive imaging technologies in a precompetitive environment. With its 600 square meters, it is not only a virtual network but also a platform and venue.
What We Offer Our Partners
- A communication platform for providers, users and a broad audience as well as a marketing instrument for advertising, sales and PR – in the shape of joint presentations at trade fairs and conferences, through joint mailings and overarching press and PR work.
- A development platform and testbed for immersive imaging technologies, applications and infrastructures
- A transfer platform for know-how – professional qualifications through workshops and conferences
- Support for research projects on industry-relevant applications – with technical advice and financial support from the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).
What We Offer Our Guests
If you would like to experience and inform yourself about immersive imaging technologies, we are happy to welcome you at the 3IT. It includes a showroom with show reels, prototypes and products of our partners and 3IT projects from the entertainment, medical and industrial sector. 3D, UHD, HDR, HFR, VR, 360 degree video and human-computer interaction technologies are on display. In addition to that you can take a glimpse at our volumetric video studio as well as watch a couple of ads in the 3IT 3D cinema, whichis equipped with 35 seats.
On average a guided tour takes between 45 and 60 minutes. The length of the tour depends on your time frame and on your interest in experiencing our 3D Human Body Reconstruction demonstration and/or the TiME Lab.
3D Human Body Reconstruction
Small groups can also view and try out Fraunhofer HHI’s HBR demonstration. Experience the 3D reconstruction of people, objects and environments for Virtual Reality. Please note that only a limited number of people can get the chance to put on the VR headgear. An additional screen, however, allows the rest of the group to watch the scenes that a person is traverses.
There is also the possibility to visit our TiME Lab Behind the acronym TiME Lab (Tomorrow‘s Immersive Media Experience Laboratory) hides an entire chain of systems and applications, which we unlock while working on projects. In the showroom setup in Berlin, experts integrated innovations from the areas of 180 ° video projection, steric audio rendition and the real-time broadcasting of panoramic recordings. Get immersed in this amazing 180° cinema with a stunning sound system! The content shown was shot with the OmniCam-360, which is a camera system developed by Fraunhofer HHI. This camera system makes it possible, to record panoramic video content in 2D or 3D.
The OmniCam-360 is just one of many exhibits in our 3IT showroom. You can learn more about it when visiting us.
If you have any questions concerning the exhibits or regarding a guided tour, the 3IT-team will be happy to help.
